Social Media Experiment

Social Media Experiment Update 5 – aka – “What is the social media experiment update after negligible social media interaction for several months?”

As you may have read in my last post, my personal life took an abrupt change in course on December 16th when my son begged me to homeschool him.  In order to add in such a huge, time-consuming, commitment into my life, I chose to back-burner this social media experiment until I could recapture more time.

Interestingly, just as calories impact your body whether you count them or not, I have discovered that the social media experiment rolls on whether or not I tend it.

This update is about what happened to my social media numbers between December 18, 2011 to March 01, 2012. In general, all of my numbers did better than I expected.  The rate of increase was much slower than it had been previously, but still, there was an increase in blog traffic, followers, fans and friends. The two metrics which showed the biggest decline were my “XeeMe” points and my Empire Avenue social media stock price.  Everything else pretty much held steady.  (In the past few days of social media activity, my XeeMe and Empire Avenue numbers are on an upward trend, as you will see in my social media experiment update on Friday.)

Frankly, I am pleasantly surprised by the results.  I am very curious to hear your opinions on a few things, so after you read this, PLEASE share a comment below about why you think I continued to have traffic and an increase in some of my social media metrics.

So here is the update:

This blog started on November 11. It has 9 11 posts currently.

There are 218 242 comments on the blog, 67 of which are my responses to comments.  175 comments are from blog visitors.

I have had 1427 2186 unique visitors and 536 816 returning visitors since Nov 1. A total of 1963 3002 visits.

Social Media Presence Change Since Dec 18

Thanks to Google Analytics and to TwentyFeet, I am able to see the traffic and my number of Twitter/Facebook followers on any particular day.  If you want to track your Twitter, Facebook Page and Profile, and YouTube followers, I strongly recommend TwentyFeet to track these and other social media site metrics.

This blog received 1242 visitors while I was gone.  Not an amazing number but still – more than I expected for an untended and non-promoted blog.

My Twitter followers increased by 18 followers.

My FB friends increased by 49 friends and my FB fans increased by 13.

Klout fell 6 points and my PeerIndex held steady.  XeeMe and my Empire Avenue stock both fell quite a bit.

I totally recognize that these numbers are completely unremarkable.  However, as I say that, I realize this blog was only a month-and-a-half old before I went on hiatus, and I was on hiatus for several months.  So, the fact that this blog got any traffic at all completely surprises me!

Where did this traffic come from?

Here is the breakdown of my top ten traffic sources:

So, there you have it, the social media update number 5. All in all, the numbers are much better than I feared. The experiment continues and I hope you will follow the journey. On Friday, March 16, I will post social media experiment update 6 with the numbers for Mar 1 to March 15.  Thanks for reading!

Social Media Experiment

So, how has the social media experiment been doing?

I didn’t accomplish all that I had hoped to this month – but I feel really great about it!  Especially since the past two weeks I have been pretty laid up with a “social media blogger pain in the neck re-injury“.

So, how did the first month of the social media experiment blog go?

This blog is 30 days old. It has 8 posts currently. There are 143 comments on the blog, 38 of which are my responses to comments. 105 comments are from blog visitors.  I have had 845 unique visitors and 327 returning visitors in the past 30 days. A total of 1172 visits.

Social Media Presence Change in the Past 15 Days

(Remember the past 15 days, I have been mostly laid up with a neck injury.)

My Twitter followers has increased by 233 followers.

My FB friends has increased by 24 friends and my FB fans has increased by 6.

My Klout and my PeerIndex have both increased.

My XeeMe XPV dropped considerably as I expected since that wasn’t my main promotional strategy during the last 15 days.  It is still higher than my number started though. I am pleased about that.

These numbers are far less than I had planned but they happened with little additional work from me since I was laid up.

I have included a list of my top referring sites at the bottom of this post.

Also, if you want to see the progress, you can see my progress report spreadsheet at http://goo.gl/PNTlH.

Okay, time for a little check in on how the social media experiment is going!

Overall, my blog presence and my social media presence has grown over the last 15 days.

Blog Presence

This blog is 15 days old. It has 6 posts currently.  There are 96 comments on the blog, 24 of which are my responses to comments.  72 comments are from blog visitors.  I have had 579 unique visitors and 217 returning visitors in the past 15 days.

Social Media Presence

My Twitter followers has increased by 390 followers.  I am not doing anything to game getting followers.  No “tweetadder”, no “tweetattack”, no mass follow/unfollow.

My FB friends has increased by 61 friends and my FB fans has increased by 32.

My Klout has dropped off a litte bit but my PeerIndexed has increased. Go figure.  Klout – down 1 point.  PeerIndex is up 7 points.

My XeeMe XPV has exploded but that is completely expected because XeeMe was my major promotion tool last week.  I expect that number to drop quite a bit as I a move onto other promotional strategies.

Now – are these phenomenal numbers?  No.  I could game the system and increase these numbers dramatically.  But are these real, white hat numbers? YES.  These are numbers that anyone could replicate.

So, what really have I done to increase my numbers? I will tell you all about it in my next blog post.  It will be lengthy but I think you will find it worthwhile.

Also, if you want to see the progress, you can see my progress report spreadsheet at http://goo.gl/PNTlH.

I haven’t yet done any guest blogging even much blog commenting so far, so I plan to start that this week.  Also, I want to create a minimally viable product over the next 15 days and see if I can start to monetize this blog.  And, I want to get over a thousand unique visitors before the month is over.  So, those are the goals!

Social Media Experiment

So, the social media experiment has run for two days.  Time for a progress report!

Current goals:

  1. Writing in Contentpalooza to create a lot of content to fill the blog.
  2. Being active in Contentpalooza and NaNoWriMo as a social media event to meet people.
  3. Looking for opportunities as a guest blogger.
  4. Working within my current networking circles to get visitors.
  5. Measuring how long it takes me to reach 200 unique visitors to my new blog only using social media.

In general, I feel good about my progress towards these goals.  My post yesterday about XeeMe was well received by XeeMe owner, Axel, and he has asked to have a copy of it on his blog.  A nice perk, there!  That is certainly a step in the right direction! My Contentpalooza activity is paying off in content more than in social buzz but it is still going well.  I feel good about my networking although I need to be more active in my various circles.  Launching the blog from scratch over the past two days has taken more of my time than I anticipated.

Beginning measurements:

  • Twitter followers = 3051
  • Facebook friends = 582
  • Facebook fans = 579
  • Unique visitors = 0
  • Klout = 51.12
  • PeerIndex = 37
  • XeeMe PV = 370

Measurements 48 hours later:

  • Twitter followers = 3155
  • Facebook friends = 608
  • Facebook fans =  584
  • Unique visitors = 34
  • Klout = 51.36
  • PeerIndex = 38
  • XeeMe PV = 470
  • You can view my progress report spreadsheet at http://goo.gl/PNTlH

Are these astounding results? Heck no!  I am happy with them overall, though.  I am not well-known.  I am just getting off the ground in launching this blog.  I think this is a good beginning.

Also for those interested in tracking:

  • My NaNoWriMo and Contentpalooza word count is 4649.
  • You can view my word-count spreadsheet at http://goo.gl/7IohK
